The World, the Dream, the Raven

I’ve been a human being for quite a while now, so plenty of opportunity to experience what a timid and frail species we are much of the time. But I know that’s not all we are. We’ve all had glimpses, in ourselves and others, of the glorious creatures we can be. If we weren’t essentially beings of beauty and power, on the road (even if limping) to creating something wonderful, why on earth would so much effort and money be relentlessly poured into convincing us that we’re weak and worthless?
I’m not denying that these are hard, mad times and so many people are suffering appallingly. But in some ways I don’t think things are worse – I think they’re more blatant. Fake news? Was there ever news that wasn’t fake? Not in my lifetime. It’s just that now we’re starting to recognise how fake it is. Time to grow up and realise that Mummy and Daddy haven’t been telling the truth. Cruelty, abuse and insane forms of hatred and untruth are flung in our faces every day because, on one level, those who do it are forever pushing to see how much they can get away with. At another level, something, somehow, has to shake us out of our numb belief in our own powerlessness. We have to get to the point where we won’t take any more, and step forward to create our world for ourselves.
After all, this world, this life, is a dream. And we can direct it. It’s the sacred dream in which our souls decided to engage. This is the dream in which we can dedicate ourselves to creating a world of love and beauty. (And yes, of course there’s a place for the ‘darkness’ too. Right now that’s not where our work is needed!) Like any game we agree to play, having said yes to it we’re called on to focus our intention and do the best we’re capable of. This means being in a place of balance between, on the one hand, being passionately committed: and on the other, not taking ourselves too seriously. When the dream is over, it’s over. We’ll wake up in our next world. In the meantime let’s recognise that the time is now, and put our full and adorable hearts into creating a beautiful world in which all life is honoured.
I’m writing on the day of the winter solstice, when the Sun stands poised for three days at its still point, before coming back to those of us in the northern hemisphere. During this time our hearts long and pray for its return, even if our brains take it for granted. I was up on Dartmoor today, and I’d been walking for some time without hearing the cry of Raven, who I love to see and hear up there. I stopped and said, ‘Raven, where are you?’ Immediately, without a pause, the answering cry of Raven came across the moor. I’m not saying this to make you think I’m some wonderful shaman! I want to remind you that we live in a world of reciprocity, where everything is aware of us, and the world is always ready to respond. When we send out energy on a certain frequency we will receive back on that frequency. We must call what we need. Let’s ground ourselves deeply within Grandmother Earth, align ourselves with her life, and know that we are truly beings of love and creative power. Then we shall not fail.
